'Pōkarekare Ana' is sometimes referred to as New Zealand’s unofficial National Anthem, and Steven Duckworth has arranged it for a mixed SATB choir with an optional quartet too.

One origin of the piece is a love story between a young man from a tribe and a girl from Rotorua. He was called to service in 1914 and never returned. Her love letters remained unanswered, and she continued to sing through her grief, begging for him to return.
